Jim Mitchell Community Park FAQs

What is the Jim Mitchell Community Park?

An open park for all the Town of Warner to enjoy, with gardens, a large patio and granite wall overlooking an amphitheater.  The amphitheater will be a grass-terraced area leading down to a post-and-beam stage, which will host performance events throughout the year.  As you enter the park, there will be a brick walkway connecting the Pillsbury Free Library to the Pillsbury Homestead, which currently houses MainStreet BookEnds.  The park will be open to all individuals and families to enjoy, as well as provide a space for library, school and town events.

Who is building the park, and who is going to maintain it?

MainStreet Warner, Inc., is raising all the money and organizing the volunteer effort to build the park.  Work completed so far is thanks to generous donations, charitable grants, and a large volunteer effort of many townspeople.  The park will be legally held as a Warner community park in perpetuity, forever, with the Board of MainStreet Warner, Inc. maintaining its upkeep.  It is privately insured, with no liability to the Town of Warner, and no use of town taxes.

Is the park for the bookstore?

The park is to be used and enjoyed by the community of Warner. It was Jim Mitchell's dream that the community center and free events he started in the bookstore would continue outside in a park.  The giving of this land to build the park was his hope and his plan, and is being built through the non-profit organization that he helped to create.  MainStreet Warner, Inc. will continue on to maintain its upkeep and coordinate ongoing events.

What happens to the park if the bookstore closes or sells?

The park is legally held as a Warner community park for all, in perpetuity, with the Board of MainStreet Warner, Inc. always maintaining its upkeep. It is a town park forever.

Is the construction on Main Street for the park, and why is the town doing it?

The Main Street Drainage Project is the long awaited solution to years of flooding in the Town Hall and neighboring buildings.  MainStreet BookEnds was approached years ago to ask if the town could bury catch basins and culverts on that property, which is the most direct drainage route to the river.  This route also avoids tearing up the roads all around Depot Street. The timing of both the Park and Town construction has allowed for this land to be cleared and the park plans to proceed.

"It is the answer to the town's prayers to solve the drainage and flooding issues, and has saved the town hundreds of thousands of dollars."  -  JD Colcord (former Selectman of the Town of Warner and member of MSW, Inc. Fundraising Committee)

What is MainStreet Warner, Inc.?

A non-profit foundation started in 2000 for “the educational, historical, and cultural betterment of downtown Warner.”  In addition to building the Jim Mitchell Community Park, this group organizes the annual Literacy Project at Simonds Elementary, the annual “Local Hero” Book Awards, funds college scholarships for Warner high school graduates, and works with other town organizations to promote our historical and cultural preservation, the arts and theater, as well as our downtown businesses.

How can I help?

The Board of Directors of MainStreet Warner, Inc. offer our condolences to the family of the Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine, who died recently.  His many contributions to the community as a whole, including his participation in the discussion and decision of the 2010 Jim Mitchell Scholarship Committee, were invaluable. We will cherish his memory.  We are very grateful to his family for their suggestion that memorial donations in Dr. Bodine’s memory may be made to the Jim Mitchell Community Park.
